Description

A car technician, also known as an automotive service technician or mechanic, has many responsibilities, including: 

  • Documentation: Keep vehicle records and update service logs. 
  • Safety: Comply with state vehicle requirements and maintain a safe and clean work environment. 
  • Inventory: Maintain stock levels, place orders, and verify receipts. 
  • Training: Stay up to date on technical knowledge by reading publications and participating in educational opportunities. 
  • Diagnostic equipment: Use computerized equipment to identify problems. 
  • Work planning: Use technical manuals, charts, and experience to plan work procedures. 
  • Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance tasks like oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid level checks. 
  • Repair: Identify and fix problems with a vehicle's mechanical and electrical systems, including replacing parts like brake pads and wheel bearings. 
  • Testing: Test vehicles on the road to ensure repairs are working properly. 
  • Customer service: Explain issues and repairs to customers, and provide cost estimates.
